IRS Encourages E-File as Paper Returns are Put On Hold

As the IRS continues to shut down large segments of its physical offices and in-person service capabilities, the agency is encouraging taxpayers to use e-file options during the 3-month federal tax filing and payment deadline extensions.

The IRS announced that paper tax returns will not be processed until processing centers are able to reopen. All Taxpayer Assistance Centers are temporarily closed, and live assistance by telephone is extremely limited or suspended.

The IRS will continue to process electronic returns, issue direct deposit refunds and accept electronic payments on IRS.gov. However, there will be a delay in responses to paper correspondence from taxpayers.
